Job Creation and Skill Training for Local People

The remediation of the site which took place when planning permission was granted in 2012 created 49 jobs, all of which were recruited within the local community and 34 of which were taken up by the previously long term unemployed. The number of long term unemployed who now have positions has since risen to 38.

The construction project, which has been taking place over the last two years, has afforded us the opportunity to offer positions to a significant number of employees from the surrounding area. 6% of the workforce are from East Manchester itself, 31% are from Manchester and Tameside and the total workforce from Greater Manchester is 61%.

The Princes Trust is a charity partner of BAM’s and as such they worked together to set up a ‘Get into Construction’ programme for local young people. 28 came to a recruitment event at the Etihad Stadium and 12 made it on to the programme. They went on to do a week’s training at Manchester College where they took courses in health and safety amongst others. Those who passed tests at the end of this week went on to take up placements on site. Three of the young people involved are now employed on site with one person working on another BAM site.

A staggering 7,323 hours of onsite training for the workforce has taken place and this figure continues to grow. In addition to this, 79 of our trainees are working towards qualifications. All of these opportunities are intended to broaden the skill set of those locally employed and as a result benefit the wider community. Every effort will be made to give those in temporary construction jobs a further year of employment and training beyond the completion of the Academy project.

As well as in the area of construction further employment opportunities will arise with the creation of around 95 permanent positions ranging from landscaping, arboriculture and water management to administration, security and site management. A target of recruiting 70% of those employees from the local area has been set.

Investment in Local Material and Service Suppliers

Over the past five years, the Club has committed firmly to sourcing materials and service suppliers locally wherever possible. The building of the Club’s offices in 2009 involved 94% of suppliers coming from the North West of England. In the case of the refurbishment of the Club’s hospitality suites in 2013 this figure rose to 98%.

As well as a commitment to employing local people, the Club has sought to work with local businesses wherever possible. To that end 528 contracts have been awarded to local companies. The provision of materials and the skills of the contractors have been of great benefit to the construction of the project.
